Luke 21:5
And as some spake of the temple,
[1] how it was adorned
[a.] with
goodly stones and
[b.] [with]gifts,
he said,
21:6 [As for] these things
which ye behold,
[1] the days will come, in the
which
[a.] there shall not be left
[11.] one stone upon another,
[aa.] that shall not be thrown down.
21:7 And they [Peter,
James, John and Andrew (Mark 13:3)] asked him, saying, Master,
but
[1] when shall these things be [when shall the temple be
destroyed]? and
[2] what sign [will there be]
[a.] when these things shall come to pass [what sign will
there be before the temple is to be destroyed]?
1. When shall the temple be destroyed?
Signs
of the end of the age
[1]
21:8 And he said,
[1] Take heed that ye be not
deceived: for
[2] many shall come in my name,
saying,
[a.] I am
[Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah]; and
[3] the time draweth near:
[4] go ye not therefore after
them.
21:9 But
[5] when ye shall hear of wars
and
[6] [when ye shall hear of]
commotions,
[a.] be not
terrified: for
[b.] these
things must first come to pass; but
[c.] the end
[is] not by and by.
21:10 Then said he unto
them,
[7] Nation shall rise against
nation, and
[8] kingdom [shall rise against]
against kingdom:
21:11 And
[9] great earthquakes shall be in
divers places, and
[10] famines, and
[11] pestilences; and
[12] fearful sights and
[13] great signs shall there be
from heaven [we know from
Matthew 24:4-8 and Mark 13:8 that Jesus is speaking here of the beginning of sorrows of Israel which will proceed His
second coming].
Persecution of
and in the early Jewish Church
[2]
21:12 But before all these [before all these
signs of the
second coming],
[1] they [both the Romans and the Jews] shall
[a.] lay their hands on you [the predominantly Jewish
Church in and around Jerusalem], and
[b.] persecute
[you],
[11.] delivering [you] up to the synagogues [only Jews would have been delivered to the
synagogues, and then solely on matters concerning the Jew’s religion, as the
Jewish religious leaders had no authority over Romans or other non-Jews], and
[12.] [delivering you] into prisons,
[13.] being brought before kings and
[14.] [being brought before] rulers
[aa.] for my name's sake
[this persecution concerns the name of Jesus].
21:13 And
[2] it shall turn to you for a
testimony [testimony about The Name].
21:14 [a.] Settle
[it] therefore in your hearts,
[11.] not to meditate before
[aa.]
what ye shall answer:
21:15 For [b.] I will
give you a mouth and
[c.] [I will
give you] wisdom,
[11.] which all your adversaries
[aa.] shall not be able to gainsay
[bb.] nor resist.
[1] Before answering His disciples’ questions concerning the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus first sets forth the signs of His second coming [c/p. Matt. 24:4-8; Mark 13:3-8].
[2] Jesus now begins to answer His disciples’ first question concerning the destruction of the temple.
